History and Evolution of Film  Lumière brothers, (  Auguste Lumière b. October 19 1862,  and his brother Louis  Lumière b. October 5, 1864 ) French inventors and pioneer manufacturers of photographic equipment who devised an early motion-picture camera and projector called the Cinématographe. They created the film  La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière  (1895; “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”), which is considered the "first motion picture" Louis    worked on the problem of commercially satisfactory development of film; at 18 he had succeeded so well that with his father’s financial aid he opened a factory for producing photographic plates, which gained immediate success. By 1894 the Lumières were producing some 15 million plates a year.   on December 28, 1895, a showing at the Grand Café on the boulevard des Capucines in Paris brought wide public acclaim and the beginning of cinema history.

Elements of Media: 4 Key Concepts

 1. Audience: The main idea behind the audience is to explore who is being represented and why, by whom, and how they are being represented, to find our "target audience", or the consumers who we are trying to appeal to. Whether its the general masses or a niche group of individuals, fairness in representation is key. Every piece of Media should have a target audience in mind, and deciding that is essential. We have to ask who the preferred audience is and how they might interpret it. If its an advertisement for a product, will they buy it? If it's the opening for a film, will they be interested enough to keep watching? 2. Institutions: Media institutions arrange, create, design, broadcast and distribute different types of media products to the masses. It's important to know how these institutions work and how they influence aforementioned media products. A company with a large funding may be looking for something different than a small, local production. 3. Language:...

Elements of Film: Film Opening

What is a Film Opening, and what does it  consist of? 1. Title sequence:  A method used in TV and Film to present their title and key cast at the beginning of the episode/film. 2.Intro:  The first scene, used to set the overall tone, introduce the characters, establish the location and begin the narrative.

Elements of Film: Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs, a concept founded by Ferdinand De Saussure. It involves the theory and analysis of signs, codes and signifying practices. the mass media understand this. They carefully select what they put in their messages — objects, images, words, sounds, even color — while taking into account the signifying value of each. The fundamental approach in media semiotics is to investigate how cultural meanings encoded by media texts (programs, spectacles, and so on) are adopted, adapted for specific purposes, and then redistributed throughout the culture. In media studies, Semiotics can help determine what signs/messages should be used, what signs/messages should be avoided, and whether proposed options are likely to have the desired impact.

Introduction

My name is Jibran Karamat, I am 17 and currently studying AS in The City School Capital Campus Islamabad. This is my blog to keep track of the opening for my film project for my AS Media Studies CAIE. I have an idea for a horror short film about 3-5 minutes long, but as far as the fine details are concerned, there are still some things that need ironing out. This is my blog to post updates on my films production and what I've learned throughout the course of my AS Media Studies class.
